Who is Seyyed Hossein Nasr?

Seyyed Hossein Nasr is a prominent Iranian-American philosopher, scholar, and author who has made significant contributions to the fields of Islamic philosophy, mysticism, and spirituality. He was born on April 7, 1933, in Tehran, Iran, into a family of distinguished scholars and diplomats. His father, Seyyed Valiallah Nasr, was a prominent Iranian diplomat who served as the Iranian Ambassador to the Vatican, Turkey, and other countries.

Nasr received his early education in Tehran and then traveled to the United States to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 1954. He then went on to pursue graduate studies in physics and mathematics at Harvard University, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in 1956 and a Ph.D. in the history of science and philosophy in 1961. Beginning his academic career as an assistant professor of philosophy at Tehran University in 1960. He then taught at a number of universities in the United States, including Harvard, Temple University, and George Washington University, where he currently holds the position of University Professor of Islamic Studies.

Over the course of his career, Nasr has authored more than 50 books and hundreds of articles on topics ranging from Islamic philosophy and mysticism to environmentalism and the relationship between science and religion. His works have been translated into numerous languages, and he has been awarded numerous honors and awards for his contributions to scholarship and interfaith dialogue.
